Different Not Difficult: Understanding Conflict Dynamics a New Way
Presented by:
Kimberly Best, RN, MA
Best Conflict Solutions
When conflict arises, we label people as "difficult." But what if the person isn't the problem? Our conflict responses are shaped by personality traits we're born with, values formed through experience, and skills we may never have learned. This session explores these dynamics through self-assessments that reveal your own patterns—because understanding yourself changes everything. You'll learn why values-based conflicts feel personal, why disagreement often means difference not opposition, and leave with practical tools you can use the same day.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify your own values, priorities and personality-based conflict patterns through self-assessment.
- Analyze how nature (personality traits) and nurture (learned behaviors and values) shape conflict capacity in yourself and others.
- Apply practical strategies for navigating differences without framing disagreement as opposition.
Kim Best is a Missouri and Tennessee Supreme Court Listed Mediator, FINRA Arbitrator, founder of Best Conflict Solutions, and Adjunct Professor at Lipscomb University's Institute for Conflict Management. She is Immediate Past President of the Tennessee Association of Professional Mediators and past Membership Officer for the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution.
Kim's career began in critical care nursing, where she learned how high-stakes communication shapes outcomes. She is author of "How to Live Forever" and creator of the Best Conflict Conversation Cards, practical tools for navigating difficult conversations.
Her core belief: there are not "people problems," only skills gaps.
